Skiing in Trysil, Norway

Earlier this year, I went skiing in Trysil, Norway’s largest ski resort. Trysil is located in eastern Norway near the Swedish border, about a 2.5-hour drive from Oslo. It’s a winter wonderland with 69 slopes spread across four ski areas, all connected by an efficient lift system. I went with friends, and although I’m not the biggest ski enthusiast, the combination of skiing, stunning mountain views, and cozy lodge life made it a trip to remember.

The Slopes & Resort

Trysil has something for everyone — from beginner-friendly slopes to advanced runs. The lift system works seamlessly, making it easy to move between areas. The resort also has a good mix of restaurants and bars, and if you’re into après-ski parties, you’ll find options (though usually only on weekends during low season).

We stayed in a skiing lodge for 4 days, and I quickly fell in love with the place. The slopes are well-maintained, the snow conditions were excellent, and the overall vibe of the resort was fantastic.

The Fun Park Experience

One of the highlights (and most humbling experiences) was trying out the fun park. My friends and I did some very small jumps — nothing impressive at all — but honestly, it already felt like we were competing in the Red Bull Extreme Games. We laughed so hard at ourselves.

Then came a group of kids with a real ski instructor. They completely stole the show: doing backflips, 360s, sliding across rails, and just throwing themselves into every feature without fear. Meanwhile, we were standing there, suddenly very aware of our “average” skiing skills. I’m comfortable going down red slopes, but that’s about it — no flips or tricks in my arsenal. We were so embarrassed that we actually waited until they had finished their run before daring to go down ourselves.

In the end, we decided to leave the park to the pros and spent the rest of the day fooling around on other slopes, enjoying the views and some well-deserved beers. Still, if you’re curious, I’d recommend giving the fun park a try — it’s fun no matter your level, and the adrenaline kick is real.

Tips for Trysil

  • Restaurants on the mountain can be expensive. Pack sandwiches and a thermos with hot chocolate for lunch, then enjoy bigger meals in the evening.

  • There are fire pits where you can grill hot dogs or whatever you bring — a fun experience out in the snow.

  • Trysil isn’t just for winter. In summer, the area transforms into a hiking and biking paradise.

Closure

If you’re looking for a ski destination that combines quality slopes, beautiful scenery, and great atmosphere, Trysil should be high on your list. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced skier, there’s something here for everyone. Just don’t be surprised if a fearless group of kids humbles your confidence in the fun park!
