Hiking in Rjukan, Norway
Last summer I visited Rjukan, a small town in southern Norway with around 3,000 inhabitants. It’s located in a valley, surrounded by steep mountains, making it a dreamlike place to stay. In the winter, the area transforms into a ski resort, but in summer it’s all about hiking and biking.

Gaustatoppen
The highlight of Rjukan is Gaustatoppen, the highest mountain in the area at 1,883 meters above sea level. On a clear day, the view from the top is breathtaking — you can see about one-sixth of mainland Norway. The hike from Stavsro on the southern side takes around 5 hours round trip. It’s not too steep, but the terrain can be rocky, so take your time.
At the top, there’s a lodge where you can enjoy waffles, coffee, and the panoramic view. Even in summer, you’ll find patches of snow and ice, which makes reaching the summit feel extra special. For the adventurous, you can continue onto a ridge with some climbing and jumping sections — but be careful, as there are steep drops and icy parts.
Toreskyrkja
Another must-do is the Toreskyrkja hike. It begins in dense forest, but soon opens up into stunning mountain scenery. At the top, you’re rewarded with a spectacular view of a crystal-clear lake. I sat there for an hour just soaking it all in — a moment of pure peace. This hike is also doable for most people, though it has a very different vibe than Gaustatoppen.
Lake Tinnsjøen
The last hike we did was around Lake Tinnsjøen, about a 20–30 minute drive from Rjukan “city.” This was the easiest of the three hikes, but the views were just as impressive. The combination of calm waters, mountains, and fresh Norwegian air makes it unforgettable.
Closure
Rjukan is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. The combination of small-town charm, dramatic landscapes, and accessible hikes makes it perfect for families and adventurers alike. I left already dreaming about going back.
